Bayonetta Developer Commentary Part 2

Filed: Bayonetta, Community, Games, PGTV, PlatinumGames

PGTV is back. For the past year, Bayonetta Director Hideki Kamiya has been playing his creation, recording not only his game play, but a commentary track on the inspiration, creation, and intent behind one of the most revered action games of all time. Last April we uploaded a subtitled version of Part 1 to give everyone a taste of these videos, but now we are proud to announce that the full English subtitled commentary will be posted on this site twice weekly!

Follow us for all the latest updates at @platinumgames. You can also send feedback about the videos to @pg_nick, @pg_jp, and of course, @pg_kamiya.

So without further ado, here is part two… (we promise, no rhyming in the video).

If you missed part 1, you can catch up here.

Be sure to watch the “Developer Commentary” tag if you ever miss an episode.

Personally I thought due to the wonderfully frivolous nature of Bayonetta's storytelling the game's presentation could have benefited from cutting away most if not all of the simple-cutscenes. Only the fully animated and most boisterous scenes really helped to heighten the experience where as the simple mostly expositionary ones ruined the pacing of the game.

I also thought the variety of different weapons was really overwhelming and an inability to focus on one set of combo moved meant I was still figuring the game out by the end. This is a game you need to play several times before you can truly appreciate the nuance of combat. Unfortunately a busy life puts a limit on how many times I can revisit a game, but I will come back to Bayonetta for a Hard playthrough sometime in the future.

Bayonetta is one my favourite recent games, the frivolous fun atmosphere of the game really is quite rare these days and thus it stays with you long after you finish playing and leaves you yearning for more, great work guys.

I never knew how badly I wanted you to do this until I saw a headline for it this morning. Please keep the commentaries coming!

Excellent videos. It's very exciting to hear Mr. Kamiya himself talk about the game development in great detail and watch him play. I think it's a wonderful idea, and I'm very happy that you came up with it. Bayonetta is a marvelous game, as being a huge fan, this is a blessing. Please keep the videos coming if you have the time, I'll be sure to watch!!

すごくうれしい!! ありがとう、神谷さん!

Please keep it up, This is like a game designers special features on a disc.

Any chance you guys can do one on mad world before you go. I am interested in how you approached the art direction with it so well.

This is pretty cool. More developers should do running commentaries for their games!

I'm gonna have to go and finally finish Bayonetta now

Aww man, I thought I was going to see Hideki bust out some crazy combos! Lol. But it's always good to hear from the man himself. Hideki, you got a very creative imagination. Keep the masterpieces coming!

I just finished this game for the first time today, love it to bits and want more the same. Thanks for making this awesome game.

Excellent stuff! I was hoping such these would have been in the games bluray since its always nice to get an insight from the developers on the elements in the game and what they wanted to portray.

I hope to bits there will be a Bayonetta 2, as Bayonetta is in my #1 favorite action game, ever

Thank you for making these for the public to view! I feel very honored to gain insight into THE greatest technical action game created, especially when it's coming directly from the very talented (and very humble) Hideki Kamiya-san himself!

Every second of these videos is fascinating. I am so glad to hear about the internal discussions regarding witchtime, and I eagerly await to hear details regarding the customizable/unlockable weapon and combat systems. I can't wait for the next videos!

Also, thank you to everyone at Platinum Games. Your works transcend "games" and become true works of interactive art – not in just visual aesthetics, but in how they empower players. Thank you.
