Last Time Up

Filed: Community, Games, PlatinumGames, Vanquish

Well, this is the last entry for “my blog”…

For this entry, I think I’ll let you in on something that went on behind the scenes, and that is what we originally wanted Vanquish to become.

In our original vision for Vanquish, no one was actually inside Sam’s suit. Instead, it was a remotely operated robot with three different pilots who would take turns controlling the unit from afar.

(These are character designer Makoto Tsuchibayashi’s original designs.)

The robot would change forms according to the pilot in charge, as each pilot had been specially trained in areas such as shooting, melee, or hover and snipe. This single robot was capable of being battle effective in a variety of situations. I thought we could make something interesting out of how these three different pilots interacted with each other, much like Kamen Rider Den-O. This idea died a quick death early in the project, but personally, I still think the idea has its merits.

When making a game, there are plenty of ideas like these that get rejected, but they build up and can end up finding their way back, like in a sequel for instance, so you can never say that an idea is completely out of bounds. I don’t know what I will be making next, but considering how fickle I am, it will probably end up being a game completely different from Vanquish.

Well, until we meet again, in the realm of the video game.

Very interesting. Its funny how collaborated ideas can make one simple idea into something greater. Good job PG, and good luck with Tango shinji! (b'–')b

Interesting idea, it would have been a cool concept to see with alot of character personality to play with. I hope you guys release an "Art of Vanquish" book with Makoto Tsuchibayashi;s work in it :D Im still waiting for my Art of God Hand :)

Very cool concept.  VANQUISH is quite possibly the best game ever made. The ending did allude to a sequel…. Yet I do want to see something completely different next. Maybe something fantasy? From TANGO?…..

Thanks for comming by.

That IS an interesting concept, it's a shame that it didn't go trough or influence the final product but I'm sure it'll come up again someday and we might even see it in action.

Remote control robots doesn't sound very appealing when you're making a game that involves fast paced action, well, not to me that is. It was a wise choice to have the user inside the suit because players love to be in the center of all the action!

And I love the idea of the suit changing forms depending on the user. It would be more interesting if the user of the suit learned new skiills, the suit would evolve into a new form, making the suit, having the potential for unlimited growth.

Shinji, you kick ass!, and it would be great if you would consider making an online shooting game. ; )

Loved the game! It has so much more places to go! Hopefully a sequel can be made to improve on some of its short comings. I'd hate to see this IP end. :(

OMG I could do with one of those right now…. nice and smooth.

May I suggest a bit em up game? Some kind of a sequel for Godhand would make me happy. It's my favourite game. Nevertheless, I would still be happy if Platinum Games would make something completely different. So far every game you created deserved to be called a good one at the very least (they are great in my opinion). Thank you for your great games and hard work.

P.S. Sorry for the language. I don't know English well.

Didn´t know that Makoto Tsushibayashi made Vanquish character´s design!!!, maybe I was too busy shooting asteroids on the credits screen or maybe It had to do with my SD T.V, anyway, great to see old colleagues working together, I guess that the talented artists always end up working together.

Regarding the gameplay concept, hope you eventually do It, It sounds pretty damn good.

its a shame when your throw away idea is better than 90% of the 3/fps's ideas that are on the market right now…

miva2 Posted on January 1, 2011 at 5:12 am

this looks more like PlatinumGames then whan Vanquish has ultimately become :)

Vanquish was a great game but it didn't live up to bayonetta or your earlier games for capcom.

I'm looking forward to all your future projects :)

Hi Developers, Artists, Animators & everyone else who made this game possible,

Just wanted to say thank-you for such an excellent game! I never even heard of it before finding it on sale a couple of weeks ago. You guys need better advertising and social networking to get the word out about your game!

I was delighted playing though your game. You certainly succeeded in creating a unique experience and new take on the TPS genre. I wrote a little tribute to Vanquish on my website to try and spread the word so others would hopefully buy it. It doesn't really do your game justice but wanted to put it out there sooner rather than later. Here's a link to the article if you're interested:

Good luck to you all on your future endeavors!

Fair winds and following seas, Mr. Mikami!

Keep it up, Platinum! Looking forward to the next project!

A very cool idea, too bad it was rejected.

Hope this idea will be implemented in Vanquish 2 or in another game.

SixtyHertz Posted on January 18, 2011 at 8:29 pm

wait did he say sequel!?!?!?!? dont tease us!

in terms of the concept, for some reason it reminds me of bangai-o…

ダンテ Posted on January 22, 2011 at 12:57 am

Thanks for your games. I hope you'll able to work again on Biohazard and GODHAND.

Man, I love Vanquish but I love that idea of what it could have been even more. Maybe for a sequel you could put that in place :D?

Bracek Posted on May 2, 2011 at 7:37 pm

Way I see it Vanquish is an amazing game that deserved a huge profit.

I was into Vanquish way back when I saw it in 2008… or was it 2009? lol oh well whenever you first released a trailer for it.

Way I see it the ending of Vanquish left dozens of plot holes open.

With the Space Station destroyed, energy reserves will drop, worsening economies; specifically the US'

Burns and President Winters dead: two very influential figures. Burns was in charge of USMC while the President killed herself.

Mysterious Figure and Zaitsev working together.

Way I see it a sequel would need a time jump, maybe 2 or 3 years.

Then, Mikami, you could bring back the concept of three suits but with 3 seperate people inside them from different countries.

Russia made one so I bet that other countries would too, at least 1 other.

So it would be the USA suit vs the Russian suit vs another Country's suit.

Overall I think that if you give Vanquish some deep thought and push some ideas after you do what you want to do you could make a fantastic sequel. It's like, this was a prequel and the next game is the real deal; a global understandable and modern crisis.

And maybe the press will be more likely to show ads on Vanquish cuz there were hardly ANY IN the US.

Well good luck Platinum! ^_^

godhand Posted on May 21, 2011 at 10:55 pm

godhand was the best game ever made and vanquish was almost as good of a game. if thair is sequal their should be more godhand refrences and their should be no easy mode screw casuals. you make the only games i like. your'e alexander. ha huhh

godhand Posted on May 21, 2011 at 11:03 pm

and if you do make a sequal to vanquish their should be a online versus mode so that hardcore gamers have a non casual shooting game.
