Augmented Reaction Suit System

Hello to everyone reading the blog. I’m Yoshifumi Hattori, and I was in charge of character modeling on Vanquish.
During the production of Bayonetta, I was primarily working on enemy models, but mid-production I was shifted to Mikami’s team. Since I was the only modeler on the team, I have a feeling that I ended up making the player character and enemies at the same time. By the way, Sam’s character was designed by Makoto Tsuchibayashi.
We focused on having lots of volume with the back pieces of Sam’s suit, as well as placing plenty of moving/transforming parts around the suit. These transformations kept changing on me, so we were often deciding on Sam’s design as we were modeling. At first, the entire suit would transform into different shapes, and there was even an idea that a female android “partner” would transform and combine with Sam (I was a fan of that one). As the player would hoist her up, their bodies would change shape in various ways from forming an enormous gun to having the android change into a boomerang and be thrown into the field.
We also had a dog character that survived all the way through the modeling phase. The robotic dog would do various things to support Sam during the game, including combining with Sam’s suit to become a powerful piece of armor.
As you can see, we went through plenty of trial an error, but considering game controls and playability, things sort of “quieted down” to the design you see now. But if you look at the small details of the suit, you can see the remnants of the previous full transformation versions.
The transformation that takes place when the helmet opens up was really well received. I wanted to see where else we could put in these elements, so we ended up with having the weapons transform as well. Johnny (Weapon Designer at PlatinumGames who designed the weapons on Bayonetta and Vanquish) already had some weapons designed, but he created new designs that fit the transforming weapon concept.
So we kept working and adjusting things until the very end, so I hope you give the ARS suit a spin for yourself. I think that you will have a great time!
Until next time!

You guys are the best! Thanks for posting these blogs! Will there be awesome artbooks for Vanquish like there was for Bayonetta? I just got my Eyes Of Bayonetta book in the mail last week! Amazing!

If the production team doesn't have time to make the dog maybe they can make it a DLC thing, maybe. Though I'd rather see the female-male transformation

I really like stuff that transforms. I'm almost sad that there is no robot dog or fem-bot partner now.

The robot dog and the android shouldn't be ruled out so soon. I could see both as AWESOME potential as DLC.

It's really disappointing to see the Dog and the Android canned.
They're both awesome ideas, it would have made the game a lot more innovative.
As for the DLC suggestions, It wouldn't work. Because you need to re-design the gameplay and level design to fit with the addition of the dog or android.
I think the Female Android is inspired from Space Pirate Cobra.

I cant believe you took out the dog and female android!!!! I just died inside hearing that… Why where they cut?! That sounds like it would have made for amazing gameplay! Oh well. The game can never get a perfect score now. 2 great parts of the game were removed that would have added the ultimate touch.

Awesome. A Shadow Dancer gameplay in Vanquish would be epic. It is sad to see the dog go … hopefully it will be considered for the future.

Wow! come on! why? Seriously, you need to include those two ideas.
Delay the game if you guy need to.
I don´t mind, but i want those two features.

I like the idea
but I think if you made it look like a Cerberus, it will hold a greater impression

The battle suit exoskeleton design is seriously cool. I REALLY LOVE the 'transformation' concept, & I wish it was still in the game. I also really like the way Gideon's helmet opens/closes. & I was thinking the weapons had similarities to BAYONETTA's. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE all of VANQUISH's art direction / design / concept…

the dog is a reference con Friender, Casshern's robot dog. what a pity that it was cut from the game, because a love casshern.

Wow i really really love the design of the suit. It's fantastic!

It is almost always interesting to get a look into the development process and see how things unfold. At this juncture I have a couple of questions:
*in an earlier entry, it was mentioned that a black version of Sam's suit had been considered, but eventually dropped. Would it be possible for this to return as an unlockable 'item'? The current design, done in black with dark-blue accents and blood-red visor, would look hella cool.
*it is pleasing to see that the English site is finally blossoming… but it concerns me that it lags in terms of content with respect to its Japanese mirror. This is not the only game project where this happens, and I am curious as to why it is so.

FRIENDER! lol – as always great work folks!
60Hertz Posted on August 6, 2010 at 12:43 pm
Hmm i'm glad they ditched the female android concept since it's seems to be an overly common theme in at least 3 games i can think of off hand, konami's quantum (forgot the second part of the name), namco's enslaved and namco's knights contract all feature female partners, konami's game you can throw the partner similar to the description of the boomerang android but not as cool lol… and i'm not sure how much game it would add but it would be a lot of extra work for mostly visual impact only.
I am tickled by the FRIENDSTER reference but also seems to be more visual gain and not much gameplay gain, all of the functionality (or at least most of it) could be done with regular weapons…
So those tough decisions to cut things were smart decisions especially if you have a limited budget…

No dog or Android then? But they were so cool!! The dog is totaly Megaman and the Android could've been like Cobra's Lady. I mean, I can see how it could also be very tacky but it's stiill a very cool concept and if pulled right it would've been downright awesome.
Anyway, keep up the good work, Your stuff looks awesome.
RedHerb Posted on August 6, 2010 at 7:31 pm
I would like know how you guys come up with the names of armor and bosses and things?
But anyway, nice ARSS!
RandomBlogReader Posted on August 6, 2010 at 11:45 pm
I'm not so sure about the android but the dog sounded awesome. I like the picture the dog giving Sam cover.
funkamatic Posted on August 7, 2010 at 12:13 am
pretty intriguing. I hope the game ends up being good, but with PG it seems you can't go wrong.
twenty1 Posted on August 7, 2010 at 6:38 am
yes the design is top notch….who doesn't like things that transform. the morphing gun is also a very nice addition. You guys told us about the dog….now we want to see it lol.
leonardo Posted on August 11, 2010 at 3:08 am
the design is awesome
hope the dog robot could be there somehow
The Destroyer of Zom Posted on August 12, 2010 at 12:36 pm
The dog idea kind of made me think of Mega Man's dog, Rush.
Reptle Posted on September 2, 2010 at 10:04 am
It's a shame to have canned the dog so early. I kinda like the idea.
A bit tired of the 'Army of One' concept.
Oh well, who knows, maybe they'll work something out.
Mike Posted on September 4, 2010 at 3:37 am
Oh why OH why the robot dog is not in there!!! This would be perfect & UNIQUE! in Shooter game…I can imagine Megaman robot dog turn out in modern reality shooter game. Please, in future…include robot dog in game…everybody LOVE ROBOT DOG!!!
Nick Posted on November 23, 2010 at 1:29 pm
Wow. I'm really upset that the dog isn't in the game now =[. The robot dog should definitely be DLC. I would ABSOLUTELY buy it.
