Voice and Voice Acting

Filed: Community, Games, PlatinumGames, Vanquish

Hello everyone, time for my second blog.

I’m actually not even sure how many of these I have to write…

Anyways, I’ll give it my best shot.

In Vanquish, each territory will have all the voice played in the appropriate language in real-time, so when you are in battle with your enemies, you don’t need to worry about reading subtitles.

When I’m working through a Western game, even one I really enjoy, I don’t have that great a grasp on what is going on and has left me with some unpleasant experiences. (This mainly only happens with shooters though…)

I also wanted to share with you one of my favorite voices in the game. I’m really hooked on the English voice for our main character, Sam. He is voiced by an actor named Gideon Emery. He has an incredible smoldering quality to his voice that I find really cool. I hope you all get a chance to listen to his performance.

And don’t worry, we have Japanese voice in as well.

So it's not Steve Blum? Huh.

The English voices I have heard so far have been excellent. I look forward to hearing the rest of the cast. Great job to everyone involved in the "localization" process!

Hmmm so Sam Gideon is named after his voice actor … nice name though

+ great resume

I think every Japanese game should have a japanese voice track option in the west. The anticipation for this anime-esque masterwork is truly immense. It simply could not be any cooler. PLEASE gift us with a western PS3 demo…..

so, the VA is great, now I wonder how's the story plot

for those not excited about this voice addition obviously haven't played Final Fantasy XII, where Gideon played Balthier, probably the best voice over in the whole damn series. When done right, English voice overs sound better since they have more variety such as accents and tone/pitch. Japanese voices tend to sound all the same.

While it is pleasing to hear that there will be multiple language options, we – that is, the community – hope that the quality of the respective sets of voice work will be up to scratch… if this (or, indeed, any quality-control issue) forces a delay, remember: better late than never (or sub-par). Keep in mind what happened to KOTOR 2 because it was rushed to release… or the PS3 itself because someone thought a holiday launch was more important than getting all the logistical kinks out (it is my opinion that the PS3 would have benefited more by having its launch pushed back to the following summer – not only would that have provided time to get the logistics in order, but it would have been an uncontested launch window with MGS4 as a big-gun launch title).

Note: if some of the OPFOR are indeed battlesuited soldiers, as opposed to robots, it would be appropriate to have them speak Russian.

Options, I love it.

So, your going all out on the language tracks, that is great. It's provably alot of work, too, but it is very much appretiated.

The bayonetta team did a great job on the voices so i'm expecting vanquish team to be up there as well!

I appreciate that you'll be doing both languages in voice acting, focusing only on English can be a detractor for some Japanese players.

I'd like to take this opportunity to ask Shinji Mikami and JP Kellam to do a video! Just like JP did with Hideki! I keep revisiting the trailer commentary for Bayonetta. It was a really cool video that showed off how PlatinumGames works, how their games are made, how much thought is put into a single trailer, etc.

Please Shinji Mikami, consider doing a video like this, or a "Shinji Answers" with questions and answers about Vanquish.

You made a good share on your collection of favorite voices in the game.
