The Vanquish Blog

Filed: Community, Games, PlatinumGames, Vanquish

Hi everyone. Vanquish director Shinji Mikami here.

Right now, my new company Tango is having a party to celebrate our first official day of business as a full-fledged studio, and I’m the only one stuck working at the moment.

Anyways, Vanquish… Lots to say about Vanquish…

After I finished up God Hand, I didn’t have a team to work with, so I spent about a year and a half staring out a window. Soon thereafter, I was finally back at work in the studio. Vanquish is my first title after this period of almost running away from being a creator. The design of the game started with my initial desire to make a game like the Japanese animated series Casshern, as well as my desire to challenge myself by making a shooter with an incredible sense of speed and no “slogging through” sections.

At that point in the design the game was a shooter with elements of Casshern (punching/kicking) from time to time, but in the end, we settled into a design that was mainly shooter with rare elements of Casshern. When you actually play the game, you realize that there aren’t that many opportunities to punch or kick in the game, but when you do get the chance, the game really does feel like an action game. Even though it is stylistically a shooter, I would be really happy to have action gamers give the game a chance as well. Thanks to the skill and hard work of the team, the graphics are really incredible in Vanquish. I can whole-heartedly recommend it.

For my next entry, I will go into a bit more detail regarding the inner-workings of Vanquish.

Until then, thanks for reading!

You did a really good job in there Mikami san, Vanquish looks awesome, solid and attracted attentions back there at E3.

Waiting for it at the end of this year with high expectations as usual.

GingerGraveCat Posted on July 8, 2010 at 11:51 pm

The game kinda also reminds me of p.n.03 for the Nintendo Gamecube. Vanquish looks awesome. I could not help it and pre ordered the game. :)

FINALLY a post from none other than the legendary Shinji Mikami

I have been waiting for this for ages.

Anyhow, I salute you on a job well done Mikami-san , Vanquish looks and feels like it will be the Gears Of War of Japan. I wish I could go to E3 to see it and play by myself

I want a demo for this awesome game this INSTANT, pretty please!

Waiting for your next detailed post and congratulation on the opening of Tango

The game looks awesome, but I wonder why he announced his new studio when Vanquish wasn't even finished… Why does he leave P* ?

FAUNA Posted on July 9, 2010 at 2:48 am

From a western gamer: VANQUISH is one of my most anticipated titles. It is simply PERFECT. Battle suits + mecha + heavy sci-fi + extreme Japanese stylization + fast frenetic tweak action = the MOST AWESOME GAME EVER. Some requests: 60 fps, an actual VERY EASY MODE (I play for the experience, not any sort of challenge), lots of long cutscenes (all in-engine, no CG), a Japanese voice track option, a rotatable model viewer of the characters & weapons etc., a special edition with hand-drawn cover art & a full-sized/full-fledged art book (not postcard sized), & multiple varied environments. What engine is this (I heard modified Bayonetta tech or CryEngine)? Thank you for making PS3 the lead platform & thank you for blessing the world with the kinds of games everyone should be making. PLEASE DON'T 'WESTERNIZE' VANQUISH (Japanese style & art is always better). Thanks for hearing out my thoughts/requests. I bow to the grand masters at Platinum*. I simply can't wait for what TANGO will gift us with….

FAUNA Posted on July 9, 2010 at 2:52 am

This is like ZOE + Virtual On + p.n. 03 = BEYOND MIND-BLOWING AWESOME!

FAUNA Posted on July 9, 2010 at 3:00 am

Grace us with a western demo PLEASE……

twenty1 Posted on July 9, 2010 at 5:04 am

Good to hear you got back into the swing of things and didn't abandon the creative director discipline. Big fan of your games and what PG* stands for….congrats on TANGO…..I hope to see more projects also from Shigenori Nishikawa (Madworld) I like his work as well.

Amir Posted on July 9, 2010 at 5:35 am

Vanquish is my most wanted game since it's announcement , i have a great faith in you Mikami-San and looking forward for your next posts .

DancingRobot Posted on July 9, 2010 at 9:33 am

I heard Mikami is going to try and work on some smaller scale games after Vanquish. While I am very much looking forward to Vanquish, I really can't wait for some more experimental games from Mikami. Games like PN03 and God Hand, which weren't block busters, but they were amazing.

I love more experimental games, but the industry is being built on the next big thing, which always causes more experimental games to be rushed, or abandon.

Anyway, Vanquish looks amazing, and looks like it'll be a fresh take on shooters. I am getting tired of every shooter pretty much looking like Gears of War. And while Vanquish looks "kind of like" Gears of War, it seems so obvious now the next thing to change up the shooter model is to add speed and lots of it.

Keep up the good work Mikami, can't wait to see more of Vanquish, and to see what comes next.

Vincenzo Posted on July 9, 2010 at 11:29 am

It's a blast to see a game that is so western oriented but still has so much " japanese flavour".

I can't wait to play it.

60Hertz Posted on July 9, 2010 at 12:11 pm

@SYL from what i read Mikami-san was never a part of P* he was always an independent, a consultant i guess would be accurate. This is a bit more common in Japan than here in the states.

Anyway, good starting post, lets hope they keep the translated post coming… or else i'm gonna have to level up on my Japanese!

Humberto Posted on July 9, 2010 at 4:55 pm

I'm glad this game is around the corner, The games I've played rencently in this genre are sorta letdowns.

EspadaKiller Posted on July 9, 2010 at 10:16 pm

I am excited about this game as well! Really looking forward to this game, Shinji Mikami you rock!

Thor Posted on July 9, 2010 at 11:22 pm

I first saw a screen shot of this game a couple of months back in an article saying "Vanquish being made by Resident Evil creator" at the time I had no idea what the picture was about. Then I saw the first trailers for it and couldn't believe what I was seeing. Everything about the trailer highlighted a sense of controlled chaos. Missiles being fired in numerous directions, fast paced action, and the main character projects individuality. Now these released screen shots. I do not know what to say… well OK, I do. From a marketing stand point I've already pre-ordered the game, from a consumer stand point the hype is already seeded into me and I'm telling friends, from a game design stand point it looks leaps and bounds above what other shooters are going for which is a slow cover based combat system and finally from an individual stand point I applaud what this development team is doing. Keep up the perfect work.

Syl Posted on July 10, 2010 at 1:55 am

@60HERTZ: thanks for the reply. I thought the 2 companies (Seeds and ODD) merged completely.

TOLLMASTER Posted on July 10, 2010 at 6:08 pm

It's sad to hear that Shinji Mikami spent a year and a half after making God Hand not able to do anything. I'm convinced that God Hand was not only one of the best action games on the PlayStation 2, but maybe the best action game of all time until Bayonetta took that spot. Vanquish will probably take the crown back, only for Kamiya of Platinum Games to develop a game that exceeds that, and other developers will look and wonder what brain-boosting chemical they're using over there.

But still, it bothers me that Mikami was rewarded for developing God Hand by feeling lost and alone. I suppose geniuses do tend to be ignored in their time.

Dixon Francois Jr. Posted on July 11, 2010 at 9:15 am

Congratulations on your new company tango Mikami and I am also glad you did not quit. Vanquish looks amazing, so amazing that developers from Insomniac cannot hold their praises until the release date. Another AAA title from Platinum Games, you guys are officially my second favorite developers after Valve. Good Luck on future titles.

Firefly Posted on July 11, 2010 at 6:49 pm

This game sounds like it'll be a lot of fun, and I find myself in agreement with Fauna's wish list. There is no excuse these days for gamers to not have a choice of voice tracks, and with all the effort that's being put into the model designs it'd be a crying shame for there to be no way to study them at leisure… the specific implementation which comes to mind would be a 'bestiary' accessible from the main menu (ala AvP: Extinction) with entries unlocked as you encounter them ingame.

And yes, if you're going to go to the trouble to spawn a limited/collector's edition, include actual Cool Swag (Splinter Cell: Conviction had the right idea – sure Ubisoft had a problem with the USB drives, but they owned up and provided their intended content on their website).

Lastly, a question: has any thought been given to a soundtrack release for this game?

leonardo Posted on July 12, 2010 at 10:02 am

awesome game, I want to get it asap, but I didn't like the fact that there's some exclusive preorder things

why that all the weapons are just in tact on the disc like bayonetta?

though I will preorder it, but I'll preorder the asian version & I don't know whether I could get access to those 3 weapons

to mikami san: could you rather make it that the weapons could be got in the game somehow, like finishing the hardest difficulty then just make it like preorder advantage

so that the preorder like just getting early advantage than non preorder?

resident evil 4 the Posted on July 12, 2010 at 6:24 pm

i 'am looking forward to play Vanquish i preorderd it today , i'am a big fan of your work mister Mikami ,
And please make us a new horror game , because when you left capcom resident evil 5 was a big letdown a bought a ps3 speciaal for the next resident evil when i played the supreme resident evil 4 on my gamecube and ps2 i waited 5 year to get a failed resident evil 5 , And for resident evil 6 I'm Sceptical ,
A resident evil without mikami san is like a metal gear without kojima san . greetings from a big from europe .

baberific Posted on July 12, 2010 at 7:04 pm

After previewing this title at E3…I have faith that this game will meet Bayonetta type expectations, I look forward to the next blog Mikami san!

spiderignacio Posted on July 13, 2010 at 2:06 am

Hello Mikami-San,

From the very first teaser I have been atracted more and more by your newest game: Vanquish.

I love shooters and what you have created here is just amazing, I cannot wait to get it. But Ilthough I understand that you have focused on 1 player expirience, I have thought some ideas to add multiplayer in a future (DLC or hopefully, Vanquish 2)

I understand that the main game is focused in Fast and Furious action shooting, and that using more characters moving so fast in the screen would be chaotic and probably affect seriously to the gameplay, but…

¿What if there is one leader who is in control of Sam and other 2 players control plain soldiers?

In the trailers we have already seen that there are normal soldiers helping the main character shooting, moving around and taking cover. If they are slower, weaker and move as the main characters of Gears of War or Lost Planet, they could bring extra support to Sam without changing the game mechanics, for it is already in the game.

Something similar has been done in the game: Clash of the Titans, and it is fun. It's like adding a secundary support gameplay. This would not affect the frenetic rhytm of the game, and also would gave another harder playability to the people who love classic shoot and cover.

The only issue would be the bullet-time, but could be solved by a shared slow-pace for all players, being the plain soldiers less harmful to the enemies.

Some rules and extra multiplayer games could be added (maybe in a later DLC)

Other examples could be:

– Hunting Sam: Many soldiers have to join their forces to hunt the over-powered Sam, maybe robots or other simple vehicles (Tanks, Trucks…). The frenetic speed and abilities of Sam would make the mission extremely difficult and exciting. (Bullet time should be removed or compensated for the soldiers)

– Armour Wars: With different Skins for Sam, a combat between equally leveled characters could be done. Maybe this could not be a good idea, but just a suggestion (Some plain soldiers could be added)

– Soldiers's Rage: Working in teams, two faction of soldiers would fight for ultimate survival. The team with more points win.

As far as I know that these ideas would not be in the game (Which is probable finished already, they could be added in a later DLC or a sequel) Playing with friends is so fun that even although a symbolic addition could enrich the expierience.

What do you think, Mr. mikami?

Hope you have a great success with this game!!!

Dixon Francois Jr. Posted on July 13, 2010 at 8:50 am

You have wonderful ideas. I hope they get implemented before release date or as DLC.

Big fan of Mikami&#0 Posted on July 13, 2010 at 3:56 pm

Hello there Mikami-san. I've been a fan for a very long time, I have owned every resident evil game that has been released today. I grew up on the Resident evil franchise., and to see it ruined by turning it into an action genre release, made me sad. In every resident evil 0 – 4 (excluding 5) there has been something that I put down the controller due to it frightening me. 0, 1 Crimson heads, 2 walking down the hallway and knowing the hands will bust through the windows, 3 NEMESIS!, 4 Oh god regenerators + the whole island! I loved it all!

One day I do hope that you create another great Survival – horror franchise, after all, you basically are the father of Survival Horror. God hand was extremely fun and entertaining to play! i couldn't help but have a grin on my face every time i knocked down and enemy and started stomping on them! It was a game that I found i could replay over and over! I love your games alot! Vanquish looks like it has alot of care and time put into it, looks extremely fun and fast paced, and it is the number one game i look forward to playing later on this year! Platinum games, it's good to have RE and DMC creators in a studio! Two of my capcom favs. DMC 4, was kind of…. i don't know. Bayonetta was great though!

Keep up the good work Mikami-san.

Greetings from Western Canada.

Firefly Posted on July 13, 2010 at 10:04 pm

As the majority of commenters who mention Resident Evil 5 have issues with the nature of the game (as distinct from mechanical issues, which are another matter entirely), I would like to put forward for consideration a contrarian view. That the change makes sense if you liken previous entries in the RE franchise to _Alien_… RE5 would be akin under that construction to _Aliens_.

While Spiderignacio's ideas are interesting (do keep in mind that a Russian mirror of DARPA almost certainly exists), I would not want to see them rushed into the final product; rather, they should be permitted to to mature in their own time and set loose… when they're done. On this note I have a suggested tweak for 'Armor Hunt': at the beginning of the scenario, one player is chosen at random to get the battlesuit. When he (or she) is killed, the level _resets_ with the killer as the new suit bearer.

Amazing Amazing job!!!! I only have a suggested don't forget a PC version, please we don't have Bayonneta and now this… please let us enjoy a time with this beauty.

Best regards,

TheFlork Posted on September 9, 2010 at 1:49 am

Hey! You guys need to make me a super duper ultra collectors edition! I demand it! I've been playing the demo non stop and its already my favorite game of all time! there is no such thing as halo or gears of war any more. If any game deserved a collectors edition its this one and i want it… NOW!

Aaron Posted on October 5, 2010 at 10:25 am

Dear Shinji,

Can I be candid?

I absolutely ADORE japanese staff.

Food. Games. Anime. Culture. Samurai. Swords. Mecha. Women. Your mindblowing stuff.

But….I have to complain….and this seems to be the case for almost all Japanese Games/Movies.

You guys always pick the worst english voice overs! The voices are always very cheesy and is always disconnected from the charactor's design. As an example, I always watch anime in Jap with english subtitles, coz the english dubbed ones always wanna make me puke.

The ONLY good english dubbed media that I know of…is Princess Mononoke. It was actually better than the original dub in Japanese. A little digging revealed that the english dub was handled by Disney.

I'm afraid…after watching some of Vanguish's videos…there is the same problem of horridly cheesy voice overs.

So please, from the next project onwards…spend a little more time on the voices? That would be Awesome.

Thanks for reading ^^

Beat the game, loved it! Great work!

FOREVER SHINJI MIKAM Posted on February 11, 2011 at 1:27 am

Hi Mikami-San!

You should make more Horrorgames like Resident Evil in the future, but the problem is to get more insanely ideas, right?

I call you just even "The master in making of interactive Horror-Survival-entertainment."

Mikami-san, please I ask you:

When you'll promote a new game-title of yours you make in the future, then will you come to Austria, too?

I'm actually from Vienna and I follow your work since Resident Evil 1 in 1996. It was a FANTASTIC game!!!! I still play it today and I can't get enough from it! (inclusive the many sequels that came out).

Well, a compliment to this site, too. I wish you many successful years with your games and career!

Regards from Vienna/Austria!
