Bayonetta Fan Art Contest – The Platinum Awards

Kamiya here. Lately I’ve been listening to the Bayonetta soundtrack while working, but whenever I listen to the music from the latter half of the game, I have some sort of conditioned response to remember being in a nice warm bath, staring back at downtown Osaka (Umeda). It doesn’t leave me in a good mood. Ahhh… The last part of Bayonetta’s development was really brutal, and since I couldn’t go home, using the spa here at our offices in the Umeda Sky Building to wash away the days fatigue was the only thing I really had to look forward to; however, it seems like that left an indelible impression on my psyche. The spa on the 22nd floor has an unbroken view of Umeda, so during the day I would escape the development floor and head up to soak my messed up body in the bath. While soaking, looking out at skyscrapers under the expansive blue sky, it felt so great, like I was in heaven… When I hear the track that plays before you enter Balder’s Room, “Paradiso – Sea of Stars,” or the final track, “The Greatest Jubilee,” I feel completely opposite to the track names themselves; it’s delusional, like I’m getting sucked into hell. Both of the tracks were composed for us by Mr. Rei Kondo… Sorry… They really are good tracks… (LOL)
Speaking of the soundtrack, it isn’t just songs created by PlatinumGames staff. We had the opportunity to work with lots of people outside of the company, which I am really grateful for. From Rei Kondo, to all the staff at GEM Impact, to Hiro-san at SEGA, thank you from the bottom of my heart! I’d love to work together again!
On to the next… A while back Wizard Magazine held an art contest entitled Bayonetta Re-Envisioned, and lots of great works were selected as prize winners. Of course, we had a say in who won, and the staff all looked at all of the entries! The Grand Prize winner was one that I selected personally.
The idea of taking Bayonetta’s design and using that as a starting point for a brand new concept was a rather unusual experiment for a contest, and all of the entries obviously showed a lot of passion, each one amazing in its own right. Because of this, there were works that we weren’t able to include in the contest, but were so good that we just couldn’t get them out of our heads. That is why we would like to point them out and recognize them here on the blog.
First up is a work by Michael Hiscott. Our concept designer Ikumi Nakamura picked this one. The cherry blossom trees in the background mesh well with Bayonetta.
Shimazaki picked a work by Chuan Ju Lee. Bayonetta started with the idea that witches had to be black, but this image boldly threw black right out the window.
Shimazaki also picked another work, this one by Alexander Gordon. It’s fancy, like it could be an illustration in a fairy tale collection.
Next is a work by Brent Patrick Wilson. This one is incredible… It was a design contest for Bayonetta, but Rodin and Jeanne are so prominent that they are the only thing we really noticed.
Actually, this work by Joshua Meeks was the most popular among the team. It looks like it was created with colored pencil on drawing paper (?), but posing Bayonetta in such a dynamic drop kick is the work of no mere amateur.
Finally, we have a work by Randall Louis. The design, expression, and pose got stuck in our heads and we just couldn’t forget it. If there were a CD with this image as its cover, I would buy it without question.
So what do you think? For all the works that we picked up in this post, we are going to send the artists a copy of the Bayonetta soundtrack, which is currently on sale only in Japan! Because of the differences in markets and the such, we aren’t sure if the Bayonetta soundtrack will be released officially overseas; however, this 5 disc set is a gem, filled with what we feel is only the best content, so I think that you will find it enjoyable.
Well, that wraps it up. Until next time!
Picture: A promotional item that will be given out in Germany. Here is a picture of the back…
Picture: It has a Gates of Hell logo. What could be inside?
Picture: A lollipop! Cherry flavored, I think? But it’s got a kick to it. Definitely not that kind of flavor you would encounter in Japan. (LOL)

They say that the part of the brain that maneges the sence of smell is the closet to the place there memories are stored. Same for taste, I bet that whatever you used to eat during the last part of production is going to really bring back those unpleasent memories so I’d avoid some of that food for a while.
So, let me ask you this, have you tried out some of the drinks they serve at the gates of hell? have you tried out certain lollipops and thought ‘this is what Bayonetta buys when she’s out to get lollipops?’

Wow- I really hope that soundtrack makes it to the US. I already spend way too much time listening to these tracks on Youtube. *chuckles*
And they should definitely make a sequel- this is my new favorite game, and I’ve clung to my old favorite since I was a kid. I love all the unlockable content, and while I’m not usually a stylish/action gamer, this game has an amazing ability to draw you in. The mythology, the graphics, the story… it’s all really awesome.
You guys did a great job! I’ll be watching for that sequel!

I absolutely LOVE the Bayonetta soundtrack! Two of my favorite tracks were the ethereal ambient music when you first go through the portal to the Paradiso realm (my favorite moment in the game, by the way. I was not expecting that! Seemed like a subtle homage to Okami. Very cool.) The other one was the breakbeat track during the Valkyrie plane chapter. Every song in the game was incredible. A very good blend of styles including gothic, orchestral, epic choir, electronic, jazz, & old-school arcade(!) The entire game was very reminiscent of a classic SEGA style title (LOVE IT). Oh yeah, the most epic ending sequence EVER & the coolest credits. Thanks for the model viewer, by the way. Can’t wait for the art book & Team Little Angels’ next title (Bayonetta sequel/prequel or an entirely new game are fine by me). Cheers to the gods/goddesses at Platinum Games!

The art in Bayonetta is simply a master class of its own. My mind was ripped to a whole new dimension during this game.

Those were some really good drawings…..props to all the winners and participants out there. The first half of this blog is real interesting on the grueling aspect of game development and how it is not just an idea and you make it happen, but it starting something and having the vision, focus, and determination to FINISH IT!!!
That is for all the aspiring game developers out there that claim to have “ideas”, You have to realize this becomes a job when you are in the industry and not just a fanboy.
So that was real talk Kamiya-san I’m greatful for P* Games I love it man. Shouts out to the whole P* Games staff much love…..stay blessed
From the West 2 the East-
PEACE

I love the soundtrack. It’s one of those that can be listened to apart from the content. My favourite kind.
Even in the game, it struck me as quite cinematic. The final battle between Bayo and Jeanne, The flamboyent monologue from Father, and then the ridiculous battle with the Deva-like boss character. Very solid and cinematic.
For those unawares, the soundtrack is available in the EXTRA menu. Don’t recall if it unlocks after you’ve finished the game or not, but I noticed it after finishing the game.

Hello.
I just wanted to say thank you for making this great game.
I think it’s one of the best games in this genre.
The combat just feels very good and satisfying.
I also really like the music in the game, especially “Mysterious Destiny”.
My only tips for a sequel is to have more gameplay and a little less cutscenes.
FAUNA Posted on January 16, 2010 at 10:51 pm
I hope the sequel has MORE cutscenes.
Santar Posted on January 17, 2010 at 6:29 am
And I hope it has a little LESS.
Gameplay is whats most important in a GAME by far for me.
I loved the cutscenes and story, I just wouldn’t mind having more gameplay in there.

txGreg Posted on January 19, 2010 at 5:10 am
Assuming that if any soundtrack makes it to a US release, it won’t be this full 5-disc version… is there any chance that we can get someone at Platinum to post an English translation of the track-listing for those of us who have imported it? That would be nice…
Shiiro Posted on January 20, 2010 at 2:54 am
I am also from Germany. Where are the promotional items are given out?!

Aw an art contest?? Why didn’t anyone tell me?
I recently did this fanart inspired by Bayonettas Universe. It’s a fellow Umbra Witch.

Just wanted to post this is a fantastic game and say thanks, it really feels like every single aspect of the gameplay was carefully thought out by the development team to make it fun, challenging and rewarding.
I’ve never had so much fun with a game in this genre, clocking over 70 hours, trying to get pure platinum in every stage and i don’t think i will get bored anytime soon.
If we could have Dante and Bayonetta in the same game, that would be a lot of good crazyness.
